Learn German articles like a machine

The basic principle of derdasdie is simple: You should not try to learn languages by memorizing rules and exceptions to those rules. Native speakers haven't memorized a bunch of grammar rules, but have an instinctive understanding of their language.

The goal of derdasdie is to teach you the articles of German nouns with a novel concept which does not yet have a name, but could be described as machine learning for humans. Machine learning algorithms are based on training a machine to predict future cases with sample data without giving the computer any explicit rules on how to evaluate the cases.

derdasdie gives you, the learner, tons of sample data, ie. German nouns and their articles. To get the most out of derdasdie, you should not try to learn nor should you try to memorize. You should only go through as many nouns as you can as fast as possible.

This exercise will provide you with a natural instinct on the gender (article) of any German noun, even those that you have never memorized, those that you don't know the meaning of and those that are not actual German words at all (yes, such words have been included in the training data formulated on the basis of discussions with native speakers).

Isn't it just flashcards?

Flashcards are used to aid memorization. derdasdie is used to avoid memorization. In order to aid memorization, flashcards repeat cards at certain intervals. In order to avoid memorization, derdasdie does not repeat cards at all. Flashcards are based on active recall. derdasdie is based on passive recall. So no, we don't think it is just flashcards.
